The
Heritage of Rolex GMT Master Series

A prominent member of the Rolex Oyster line, the GMT Master series was introduced to the watchmaking world in 1955 to a warm reception. Designed in
collaboration and for Pan American World Airways (“Pan Am” for short), the
handsome timepiece featured a duo-coloured rotatable bezel that allowed Pan Am aircrew
to tell the time in two different time zones with the extra hour hand.
Rolex later perfected the series, replacing the bezels
of its watches with high-performance ceramic for increased durability and
resistance to UV rays and corrosion. The new ceramic insert, patented by Rolex as Cerachrom, was first seen on the
GMT Master II in 2005, sporting a solid
black bezel.
Applying the same component to the iconic
duo-coloured aesthetic of the GMT bezel however, proved to be challenging. It required
much fine-tuning, extensive research and meticulous techniques without
compromising the brand’s stringent quality standards. The Research &
Development team in Rolex eventually succeeded in combining the technology of
the Cerachrom with the two-toned bezel, flaunting perfect division and no
colour bleeding.
In 2013,
the first duo-coloured Cerachrom bezel in blue and black was introduced to the
world.
Following its success, Rolex re-released
its popular GMT Master II in red and blue in 2014.
As Rolex continues to refine its watches,
the GMT Master remains the epitome of elegance, well loved by travellers and
airline pilots. Unquestionably, the timepiece has since inspired a multitude of
other watch brands and models in the horology scene.
